What we keep,
and what we never ask for.
Privacy isn’t a feature in nainai — it’s the thing the app was rebuilt around. This page explains it in plain English.
Last updated: 2026-05-08
The short version
nainai is a journal of the books you read aloud with your kids. We collect as little as we possibly can to make that work — and we collect nothing about your child that could identify them.
- Yes, we collect:your email; the books you log; the reactions kids tap; opt-in nicknames for each reader; a child’s birth month and year only.
- No, we never collect: photos, last names, real full names, full birthdates, location, contacts, browsing history, or any advertising identifiers.
- We don’t sell data.We don’t track you across other apps or websites. There are no third-party advertising SDKs in the app.
What we collect, in detail
Account
Your email address, used to sign in, send you the optional weekly digest, and reach you about the service. If you use Sign in with Apple, you can choose to hide your email and Apple gives us a private relay address instead. No phone number is collected.
Readers (the kids in your household)
For each reader you add, you choose:
- A nickname— anything you call them. It does not need to be a real name and we recommend it isn’t.
- A characterfrom the gallery. There is no option to upload a photo because we don’t want one.
- A birth month and year — never the day. We use this only to show age-appropriate book picks.
- Whether the reader is a child or adult — and an optional relation label (Mom, Grandma, Aunty, etc.) so the digest can address them warmly.
Reading log
When you log a reading, we store the book identifier (ISBN/ASIN), a timestamp, which readers were present, and which reactions each reader tapped (love / like / dislike / none).
Family circle
If you invite a grandparent or other family member, we store their email address and an optional relation label. We never share your household’s data with anyone you haven’t invited.
Diagnostic data
Crash reports and basic performance metrics, not linked to your identity, used only to keep the app running smoothly.
How we use what we collect
- To run the app and the diary you create inside it.
- To show recommendations based on what kids the same age have loved.
- To send the weekly digest to people you’ve invited to your family circle, and only those people.
- To respond to your support requests, security issues, or account questions.
Children's data
nainai is intended to be used by parents (and other adults in a family circle), with kids participating by tapping reactions during a reading.
We’ve built nainai so that a child cannot be identified from its records. We don’t collect a child’s real name, date of birth, photo, voice, location, or any contact information. The child’s nickname and avatar are deliberately abstracted so that even a public diary URL reveals nothing personally identifiable.
If you believe we have collected information from a child in a way that doesn’t live up to this, please email us at support@gratum.co and we will delete it immediately.
Your rights
- Access — you can see everything we hold about you and your household inside the app. Email us if you want a portable export.
- Correction — you can edit nicknames, ages, relations, and books inside the app at any time.
- Deletion — in the app, go to Readers → Delete account to erase your account and everything in it immediately. Or email support@gratum.co from the address on your account and we will do it for you within 30 days.
- Stop the digest — every digest email has an unsubscribe link, and you can remove someone from your family circle in Settings any time.
How long we keep things
Until you delete them, or until you delete your account. Backups normally cycle out within 30 days. Diagnostic data is retained for up to 90 days.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a way that materially affects what we collect or how we use it, we’ll email everyone with an account before the change takes effect. The date below is when this policy was last updated.
